New for 2017
After a substantial 2016 model year refresh, changes to the Acura ILX are minimal for 2017. Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, and San Marino Red join Bellanova White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, and Catalina Blue Pearl on the exterior paint palette.
Vehicle Summary
The ILX is Acura’s entry level sports sedan and sits below the mid-size TLX performance luxury sedan and the RLX luxury flagship sedan. With strong sales among millennials, Acura lovingly refers to the ILX as a gateway sports sedan.
Overview
In addition to its 2016 styling makeover, the Acura ILX gained a new engine and transmission. The previous car was available with either a 150-hp (140 lb-ft) 2.0-liter I-4 and five-speed auto combo or a 201-hp (170 lb-ft) 2.4-liter mated to a six-speed manual. Both drivetrains were replaced by a new more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder mated to a new dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter and paddle shifters. The ILX’s new direct-injected 16-valve engine makes 201 hp and 180 lb-ft.
Not only is the new engine more powerful, but the new powertrain returns better fuel economy. Under the now-stricter EPA testing guidelines for 2017, the Acura ILX is rated 25/35 mpg compared to 22-24/31-35 mpg for the previous drivetrains under the older testing guidelines.
Although it shares its underpinnings with the Honda Civic, the Acura ILX features more sound deadening, higher-quality interior materials, and more available features and technology. Much of that technology is aimed at attracting millennial buyers.
Safety
The Acura ILX entry-level sports sedan has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), andthe 2016 model is considered a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. The ILX received a front crash prevention designation of Superior when equipped with optional AcuraWatch Plus package featuring Collision Mitigation Braking System, scoring 5 out of a possible 6 points. The system helped reduce vehicle speed by 11 mph in the 12-mph autobrake test and reduce speed by 15 mph in the 25-mph autobrake test. Other features included in the AcuraWatch Plus package include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning, and the Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning and pedestrian-sensing capability.
What We Think
We were impressed with the redesigned Acura ILX in our First Test review: “We expect the refreshed ILX would be more mature for 2016. But who knew maturity could also be so much fun? Gone are the days of that optional six-speed manual, but so is that underpowered 150-pony, 2.0-liter four-cylinder for the base model. A fresh new design, buttery dual-clutch transmission, plentiful standard features, and engaging driving dynamics make a strong case for this entry-level luxer.”
Cool Fact
The Acura ILX A-Spec package includes a full body kit, unique decklid spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels (instead of the standard 17s), alloy pedals, and Lux Suede seat inserts.
Key Competitors
Edgy and sporty, it uses a sharp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and paddle-shifting twin-clutch 8-speed automatic transmission. It makes 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. The ILX cabin is a sweet spot to spend time, with contoured surfaces and instruments that are easy to read.
The Acura ILX competes most directly with the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA.
For 2016, it got a light update, with LED headlamps, better interior materials, and more available connectivity including a dual-screen infotainment system. The 2017 Acura ILX is unchanged.
The NHTSA gives it five stars for crash safety, and the IIHS gives it top scores including in the small overlap frontal impact test, which very few cars ace. Acura's available advanced safety systems were rated Superior, to give it a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
The 2017 ILX is rated by the EPA at 25/35 miles per gallon City/Highway, or 29 mpg Combined. Premium fuel is recommended, so that raises the fuel cost. That's 2 mpg more than the A3 and 1 mpg less than the CLA. Full Review

Michigan drivers would be hard-pressed to find a compact luxury sedan with the responsive handling and impressive fuel efficiency of the 2017 ILX. But this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Despite being one of the most competitively priced vehicles in its class, the new ILX is not frugal when it comes to high tech features and elite safety standards.

The transmission is a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic; a manual is not available. The automatic is smooth and gives the ILX more of a calm and adult demeanor, which is a welcome change from the previous generation’s high-strung character. The ILX offers value for the money versus the competition.” ~ Car And Driver 1
“The 2017 Acura ILX offers up a lot of premium content in a car with a premium badge, but without a premium high price. If you’re looking for a sedan and want a brand that isn’t mainstream, the ILX is worth a look.” ~ Kelley Blue Book 2
“The 2017 Acura ILX isn’t long on glamor, but it’s a focused and comfortable compact sedan on the first rung of the luxury ladder.” ~ The Car Connection 3
With a 2.4L four-cylinder engine linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 2017 Acura ILX scoffs at the cliché of labored, unimaginative luxury sedan performance. Thanks to a sturdy front subframe and first-class calibration to the electric assist, the new ILX offers a more direct steering experience. Now, add a smooth-shifting gearbox, paddle shifters, and aluminum performance pedals and every Michigan road will feel like your own personal raceway.

The 2017 Acura ILX features the 2.4L four-cylinder engine designed for the new TLX. This aluminum block engine is lightweight for maximum fuel efficiency and to get the most out of the engine. You’ll have no trouble enjoying that full 201 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, and it will feel the way a traditional engine does – no turbocharger lag.
This new automatic transmission was designed by Acura for the race track, and it was engineered specifically to be paired with the 2.4L four-cylinder engine you’ll find on both the ILX and TLX. Experience smooth and fast shifting and notice an overall boost in fuel economy over traditional automatic transmissions.
You can feel the performance nature of the 2017 ILX through the soles of your shoes. Built for performance, the ILX’s polished aluminum pedals are covered with a black grip that keeps your feet from sliding while performing some spirited driving maneuvers. They give the driver’s seat a fun look and feel as well.
Front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link suspension combine to offer responsive handling. The MacPherson strut design is meant to provide superior crash resilience as well, and the multi-link rear suspension removes that center hump and gives rear passengers more legroom.
Previous ILX models were already praised for their tight steering, and the new column and mount assembly builds on that. Add in the linear steering response that keeps behavior predictable at 30 mph and 65 mph, and it’s clear that the ILX is engineered for intuitive control, making you comfortable behind the wheel at any speed.
The 2017 Acura ILX is built for performance inside and out. Dynamic lines give the exterior a unique design, but the truly marvelous bit of ILX design is underneath the shell where reinforced joints build a more unified frame and deliver fewer potential stress points for a stiffened body.
The Acura ILX has never shied away from making bold, exciting statements when it comes to style, and the 2017 ILX is no different. Large wheels and tires, impulsive curves, and contoured surfaces give the ILX an athletic look; while signature Jewel Eye LED headlights, a unique front grille, and LED-accented taillights provide a visually distinctive presence that drivers have come to expect from the Acura ILX.

The 2017 Acura ILX is able to detect when your key fob is nearby. The Keyless Access System can actually let you into the cabin without ever having to dig around for your keys. From there, you just give the “start” button a push, buckle up, and head on your way.
The ILX features Jewel Eye LED headlights, an Acura-exclusive lighting concept. Five LEDs in each light combine with a set of reflectors to give a whiter, brighter beam at night, and those same reflectors deliver a diamond-like look during the daylight.
Each 2017 Acura ILX has a multi-view camera which displays on the in-dash screen when you move into reverse. By pushing a button, you can switch from top-down to wide-angle to standard views and enjoy confidence when backing up or parking.
Escape road noise, blusterous wind, and the purr of your own powerful 201 hp engine in the cabin of the 2017 Acura ILX. The new ILX is loaded with standard features, including noise/sound cancellation technology to keep out any unwanted clamor. Pair this quiet ride with next-level amenities like a rearview camera, front heated seats, power moonroof, and voice activated controls and it’s easy to see why the ILX stands out in the compact luxury sedan class.

An eight-way power driver’s seat lets you get comfortable, and both front seats feature standard heating elements for those cold Midwest winters. Soft and welcoming upholstery makes the driver’s seat an inviting place to take a break, even if you have nowhere to go.
The 2017 ILX features dual-zone climate control as standard, adjusting automatically to your presets as the cabin temperature changes. Stay as cool or as warm as you prefer. The available GPS unit is even able to adjust the temperature settings to account for how much sunlight you’re receiving.
The rear suspension of the ILX removes that uncomfortable middle seat hump in the floor to give you room for three full-size adults in the rear seat. Of course, the fold-down center armrest can give two rear passengers their own space, serving as an excellent divider between the kids on a long trip.
With the level of modern auto technology, the traditional center console would feature dozens and dozens of buttons. Acura replaced this cumbersome interface with an available touchscreen, their On-Demand Multi-Use Display (ODMD). The controls change function to be what you need when you need it, reducing clutter and giving the 2017 ILX a more streamlined look.
Sophisticated controls for the ILX’s technology are located within easy reach on the steering wheel and in the center console. Making calls or skipping through songs is as easy as tapping a steering wheel button, but if you want something a bit more advanced, the ILX has an available voice command system that can respond to over 600 words.
It’s often illegal and always unsafe to text while driving. But sometimes you need to stay connected, and Acura has taken that into account. SMS texting for iPhone and Android users as well as compatibility with Siri Eyes Free lets you send and receive texts while driving without ever touching your phone. You don’t have to leave friends, family, or work behind anymore.
Elite technology and intelligent engineering go hand in hand when it comes to Acura safety. Forward thinking like the AcuraWatch safety suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation, and forward-collision warning make the 2017 ILX one of the safest vehicles in its class. Acura has always gone above and beyond government standards when it comes to safety, and the ILX is further proof that Acura isn’t just luxurious quality, it’s sophisticated safety as well.

Within a fraction of a second after a collision, the ILX front seat belts’ tensioner systems tighten to secure their occupants and decrease the chance of bouncing around the cabin. Rear seats all feature head restraints and three-point seat belts as well.
The 2017 ILX features advanced sensors designed to detect whether or not a full-size adult is sitting in the front passenger seat. If it senses there is not a full-size adult, it turns off the airbag on that side to reduce the risk of injury. LATCH-compliant child safety seat anchors allow for easy and quick installation of safety seats as well.
It’s called the “Advanced Compatibility Engineering,” or ACE, body structure, and it’s the frame the entire ILX is built around. The ACE design is meant to redirect crash energy from the passengers and keep it evenly distributed among all vehicles in a collision.
This available AcuraWatch safety feature can help alert you to a potential accident and maybe even prevent it before it happens. With a radar system and a front camera, the car can detect how far away a vehicle is and whether it believes you are on a collision course, applying the brakes automatically to slow you down if necessary.
This forward-facing camera is available to detect when you have started to drift from your lane. If you haven’t signaled and are moving left or right of your lane, the system will give you a warning. It can even give you a gentle nudge back to the center.
You should always do a manual check, but this available radar based system can tell if a vehicle is in its “alert zones” or your blind spots. It will light up a light on the front pillar if it detects a vehicle in the blind spot, and if you signal to change lanes that direction, you’ll receive an audible warning and the light will flash to help you avoid colliding with another vehicle.
