S class 2017

2017 Mercedes S-class Aims To a Higher League

By Justin Patterson 3 Oct 2016

Everyone knows the S-class, thanks to legendary W140 and W220 models – it is executive sedan which is way ahead of any kind of other cars in terms of comfort and equipment. The current generation debuted back in 2013, so now it’s the right time for mild facelift. The main rivals for the car are 7-series BMW, Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ. We think that there won’t be that much difference to the overall appearance of the new S-Class, but we do know that Mercedes have put a lot of work into reengineering the car, and despite that models have been seen out testing on public roads, Mercedes aren’t quite ready yet to launch the new car.

As we’ve already stated, the new S-Class is currently under test conditions on the public highways, but we still don’t expect to see the model released until at least late 2016, perhaps even as late as early 2017.

2017 Mercedes S class release date: early 2017

Update: already available for purchase

Keeping in line with competition and the current pricing structure should mean that the new 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will start around the $100,000 mark.

Update: Pricing for S-class starting from $97,525 for the standard equipment version, up to $171,675 for S600.

2017 S class Engine Features and Changes

Starting under the hood, we will see the same range of powertrain options, but tweaked slightly for better mileage and CO2 emissions. This means that the base model will have a 4.7 liter twin turbo V8, capable of producing 449 BHP. We’ll also see a 48V mild hybrid version making an appearance later on in the production run. Mercedes will offer an all-wheel drive as an option. There is also a S600 modification with twin turbo V12 producing 523 HP.

We know that Merc have updated and restyled the front and rear bumpers, changed the headlight cluster and redesigned the rear tail lights on the exterior, but there isn’t much more than that; those hoping for significant changes will be disappointed, but we think the current S-Class is pretty stylish as it is.

Mercedes have put a little more effort in to the interior; pretty much everything will be upgraded to make the cabin a nicer and more user friendly place to be.

The instrument cluster will be wider, with a frameless dual screen display. Behind the system will be the updated Mercedes COMAND infotainment system, which will run through the updated touch sensitive controller on the center console, although it is also rumoured that Mercedes are currently working on a version of Gesture Control for the system; it remains to be seen if this will be on the 2017 S-Class. Finally, there will be other minor tweaks such as a thicker, three spoke steering wheel and upgraded trim materials.

No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome the laws of physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. Performance is limited by available traction, which snow, ice and other conditions can affect. Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Best performance in snow is obtained with winter tires.

Active Brake Assist may not be sufficient to avoid an accident. It does not react to certain stationary or suddenly moving objects or pedestrians, may not react in certain situations where objects cannot be clearly identified, nor does it recognize or predict the curvature and/or lane layout of the road or every movement of vehicles and pedestrians ahead. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the system's alerts before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safely. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

3

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is not a substitute for active driving involvement. It does not adapt cruising speed in response to stationary objects, nor does it predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. See Operator's Manual for system operating speeds and additional information and warnings.

4

Active Steering Assist requires driver to hold steering wheel and be ready to steer vehicle at any time. It may not recognize lane markings in some lighting, weather and road conditions. It is the driver's responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle.

While the navigation system provides directional assistance, the driver must remain focused on safe driving behavior, including paying attention to traffic and street signs. The driver should utilize the system's audio cues while driving and should only consult the map or visual displays once the vehicle has been stopped in a safe place. Maps do not cover all areas or all routes within an area.

Photos The elegant and powerful Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the benchmark for full-size luxury cars. It has some of the most advanced safety technologies on earth and is one of the most lavish and classy displays anywhere of wealth and exclusivity. It was last redesigned for 2014.

The 2017 S-Class brings two new models, the Mercedes-Benz S650 Cabriolet and the long-wheelbase S550 4MATIC. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550 gets a paddle-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, and all 2017 S-Class models get the mbrace2 Connect infotainment package.

The S550 uses a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive is available for sedans, 4MATIC comes on all S550 coupes. Air suspension is standard.

The S63 AMG models use a 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 making 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque with 4MATIC. They will accelerate from zero to sixty in 3.9 seconds. The rear-wheel drive S65 AMG, and the Maybach S650 use a twin-turbo V12 making 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The S600 models have a 523-horsepower V12.

The Mercedes-Maybach models go off into Rolls-Royce territory, with all the technology and features wrapped into a limo-like body that's eight inches longer.
