Using an in-vehicle camera and radar to help detect a vehicle or a pedestrian in front of you, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD) can help you mitigate or avoid a potential collision. If the system determines that a frontal collision is likely, it prompts you to take action using audio and visual alerts. If you notice the potential collision and apply the brakes, PCS w/PD may apply additional force using Brake Assist (BA). If you don’t brake in time, it may automatically apply the brakes to reduce your speed, helping to minimize the likelihood of a frontal collision or reduce its severity.

Under certain circumstances, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is designed to detect lane departure on roads with visible lane markings. LDA only activates when you’re traveling at a speed of 32 mph or faster. When you hear and see the alert, after carefully checking the road around you, you should safely direct your vehicle back to the center of your lane. In addition, Avalon’s Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) and Electronic Power Steering (EPS) include Steering Assist (SA) functionality. When it’s activated and senses that you’re unintentionally drifting, the system may automatically make small corrective steering inputs to help keep your vehicle in its lane.

Intended for highways and similar to “constant speed” cruise control, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) lets you drive at a preset speed. DRCC uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, which adjusts your speed, to help you maintain a preset distance from vehicles ahead of you that are driving at a slower speed. DRCC uses a front-grille-mounted radar and an in-vehicle camera designed to detect vehicles and their distance. If a driver is traveling slower than you, or within your preset range, DRCC will automatically slow your vehicle down without deactivating cruise control. If DRCC determines you need to slow down more, an audio and visual alert notifies you and brakes are applied. When there’s no longer a vehicle driving slower than your set speed in front of you, DRCC will then accelerate and regular cruise control will resume. Select Avalon model grades feature Full-Speed Range DRCC, which is designed to operate between 0-110 mph. This enables low-speed following, matching speed and, under certain circumstances, stopping before colliding with preceding vehicles on highways.

Automatic High Beams (AHB) are a safety system designed to help you see more clearly at night—without blinding other drivers. Designed to activate at speeds above 25 mph, AHB rely on an in-vehicle camera to help detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically toggle between high and low beams accordingly to provide the appropriate amount of light. By using high beams more frequently, the system may allow earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.

2017 Toyota Avalon Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos

The Toyota Avalon doesn't beg you to own it or drive it. It puts comfort to the fore: it's comfortable like a pillow-top bed, and no longer rides or handles like one.

This year, it's offered as an Avalon XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Limited, or as an Avalon Touring. Avalon Hybrid sedans come in XLE and sporty Touring trims.

The big news for 2017, though, is that Toyota has made a suite of safety gear standard, including forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking; adaptive cruise control; automatic high beams; and lane-departure warnings.

Review continues below

The main rivals for the Avalon include the Chevy Impala, Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, and the Ford Taurus.

We give the Avalon a very good score of 7.8 out of 10, with big points for its safety and comfort. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

Toyota Avalon styling and performance

Toyota redesigned the Avalon in 2013, and gave it more visual distance from the Camry that shares its running gear. It now has real presence, thanks to a swoopy roofline, flared-out rear fenders, and laid-back rear glass. Inside, the Avalon's contemporary layout and look still wears flush, touch-based dash switches for a clean, high-end-audio look. Cabin materials are superb, and fit and finish is up to Lexus standards.

Avalons come in gas or gas-electric form. A strong and smooth 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is the stock powerplant, but the Avalon Hybrid drivetrain gets our attention. With 200 hp from its combination of motors, batteries, and an inline-4, the Avalon Hybrid is reasonably quick and astonishingly efficient, at 40 mpg on the EPA combined scale.

This latest Avalon feels more composed and refined, too. We wouldn't call it sporty, but it's struck us as supremely capable and controllable in a way that older models weren't. It has completely abandoned the floaty ride and senseless steering of the past for a direct but not firm road feel.

The EPA hasn't compiled numbers for 2017 yet, but it put the V-6 Avalon at 21 mpg city, 31 highway, 24 combined last year. The Avalon Hybrid's EPA ratings of 40/39/40 mpg make it one of the most fuel-efficient large sedans in any driving situation, and definitely the most efficient for city driving and stop-and-go traffic.

Avalon comfort, safety, and features

The Avalon is roomy, modern and thoughtfully composed. The front seats could use a little more lateral support, but the back seats are among the best you can find in large sedans. The Avalon gets a 16-cubic-foot trunk, and with a flat floor and wide opening, you can fit a lot of grocery bags. Hybrid models have a slightly smaller 14-cubic-foot trunk, but the lost space is a small sacrifice for the efficiency gains.

The Avalon offers a strong list of safety features, including separate rear side-thorax airbags and front knee bags, and crash-test ratings have been almost perfect across the board. All models come with a rearview camera, while blind-spot monitors are standard on Touring models.

The Avalon is plushly outfitted, with power features, leather, and a 7-inch touchscreen that governs the audio system. Avalon XLE and XLE Plus models get woodgrain trim, while XLE Premium models get navigation and Qi wireless smartphone charging.

Touring models get gray 18-inch wheels, a unique front end, and LED headlights. Top Limited models pile on the premium tack, with perforated leather upholstery, heated-and-ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a rear sunshade, 785-watt JBL audio, HID headlights, and LED daytime running lamps.

2017 Toyota Avalon - For every turn, there's cars.com.

The 2017 Toyota Avalon is a five-seat full-size sedan that competes with the Hyundai Azera, Chevrolet Impala, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Taurus. All 2017 Avalon models are equipped with front-wheel drive. Available trim levels include XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Touring and Limited. There is also a hybrid version of the 2017 Avalon, covered separately.

What's New on the 2017 Toyota Avalon?

All 2017 Toyota Avalon models come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes lane departure warning and prevention, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection.

How Does the 2017 Toyota Avalon Compare to Other Sedans?

The 2017 Toyota Avalon outshines many of its competitors in terms of safety technology thanks to the newly standard Toyota Safety Sense P suite, and it offers an appealing list of standard features, too.

The 2017 Avalon falls short in many practical areas, though, such as its unintuitive multimedia system, small trunk and comparatively high price is its class - its base price is well above the starting price of the Chevrolet Impala, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Taurus.

What Features in the 2017 Toyota Avalon Are Most Important?

The 2017 Toyota Avalon comes equipped with a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Significant standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, heated front seats and leather upholstery. As required on all new vehicles, every 2017 Avalon comes equipped with front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.

Significant available features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, a navigation system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.

Should I Buy the 2017 Toyota Avalon?

The 2017 Toyota Avalon features remarkably comfortable and supportive front seats, and its great ride quality stands out. Its styling is distinct, and the Avalon doesn't produce much wind noise even at highway speeds. But while it's an extremely feature-rich vehicle, its touch-sensitive controls are highly unintuitive, and its interior materials and design are a bit lacking. As a practical matter, the rear seats don't fold down, limiting its cargo space.

Ultimately, the 2017 Avalon's design shows its age, and similarly equipped full-size sedans can be had for a lower price.

2017 Toyota Avalon Release Date, Specs and Review

With its combination of style, overall quality, comfort, and a willing performance, the new and refreshed Toyota Avalon 2017 comes with a myriad of changes. Some of its pros include a new XLE trim, upscale and quiet cabin, above average fuel economy rating, a spacious seating, and tones of standard equipment. Rumors allege that its release date is set for this fall.

2017 Toyota Avalon

Some of the leaked XLE’s details include a 7” screen, a new front grille, a standard Entune Audio Plus system, new turn signals, and Connected Navigation Scout GPS Link. However, the engine department remains unchanged and features the existing 3.5L V6 base engine.

We all know too well the conservative nature with which the Avalon has characterized its existence. But don’t get me the wrong way, the Avalon has rather shied away from fashion and style fads in favor of comfort and no-nonsense design. However, things seem to be moving in the opposite direction with the 2013 design which brought about subtle changes including sporty handling and a stylish exterior design.

Despite Toyota undertaking such a massive risk, the vehicle still managed to keep things alive and gave it a modern appeal and a pleasant driving character. In addition it comes with a serene and comfortable interior in addition to offering plenty of space for its passengers. Plenty of top-notch features are available even for its base, for instance, the base comes with fitted with upscale features like leather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, and smartphone app integration.

Still, the new 2017 Toyota Avalon comes with some few features worth lamenting over. Most notable one is the firm ride quality that might upset traditional Avalon buyers. Fortunately though, the segment comes with a plethora of choices. They include Kia Cadenza 2017, 2017 Chevrolet Impala, and 2017 Chrysler 300 sedan.

Toyota Avalon – Available Trims

For the 2017 Toyota Avalon, buyers should expect up to six trims: XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, XLE Touring, Limited and top-of-the-line Touring Sport. The 2017 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is reviewed separately.

Interior Colors & Exterior Pictures – 2017 Toyota Avalon

Starting off the trim lineup is the base XLE trim that should be expected to come equipped with heated exterior mirrors, a four-way power front passenger seat, automatic headlights, telescopic-and-tilt steering wheel, 17” alloy wheels, full power accessories, automatic climate control (dual zone), and adaptive cruise control. Electronic features include an eight-speaker sound system, satellite and HD radio, a rearview camera, an auxiliary audio jack, iPod/USB interface, a 6.1” touchscreen interface, and an auxiliary audio jack.

2017 Toyota Avalon front

The new XLE Plus adds the base’s equipment feature list and adds Connected Navigation Scout GPS Link, standard Entune Audio Plus system, new front grille, and a 7” display. We will update the list once we get hold of more information.

2017 Toyota Avalon back

Picking the XLE Premium trim gets you a power sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, auto-dimming aftview camera, and LED headlights.

Opting for the XLE Touring gets you a nine-speaker sound system, smartphone app integration, 18” wheels, 7” infotainment screen, foglights, a navigation system, rear-cross traffic alert, driver memory settings, and blind-spot monitoring.

Nearing the top of the lineup is the XLE Touring Sport that adds ventilated leather upholstery, xenon headlights, black-colored alloy wheels, and dark-blue-piping-embedment on the seats.

The Limited comes bundled with heated rear seats, upgraded leather upholstery, automatic climate control (tri-zone), xenon headlights, an eight-way adjustable power front passenger seat, JBL premium sound system, a rear power sunshade, ventilated front seats, automatic wipers, upgraded leather upholstery, and driver power lumbar.

Engine Specs – 2017 Toyota Avalon

A carryover 3.5L V6 engine rated at 270 horsepower and 248 lbs. of torque comes beneath the 2017 Toyota Avalon hood. The power is transmitted via the six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

During our test drive, the XLE model was able to sprint from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which is impressive going by what other models in the same segment offer.

As per the EPA ratings, expect anything around the existing model’s fuel economy ratings which stand at 21/30/24 mpg in the city/highway/combined.

Price & 2017 Toyota Avalon Release Date

Rumors allege that the 2017 Toyota Avalon’s release date is set for this fall. As for the price, this is what Toyota has provided: the XLE V6 starts at 33,485USD inclusive of the destination charge, the fresh XLE Plus – $35,235 including shipping charges, and $37,484 for the Avalon Hybrid model.
