The RS Package on the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is new for the 2018 model year. It is available exclusively in China and adds the following features:
The Equinox RS is available in:
The Equinox RS is priced between RMB 220,900 and RMB 250,900, or $34,074 and $38,701 USD (converted August 2017).
With crossovers and SUVs accounting for such a tremendous share of new passenger vehicle sales these days, each automaker is looking to cash in on the boom by diverting ever more of their resources to introducing enticing new models and trim levels. General Motors is no different, as evinced by new product lines like the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Blazer, and new or recent models like the Chevrolet Blazer RS, Traverse RS, and Tahoe/Suburban RST.
But there’s one obvious addition to GM’s U.S. product lineup that somehow hasn’t yet manifested: the Chevrolet Equinox RS. Such a model already exists; it launched exclusively for the Chinese market back in 2018. Now, we think it’s about time GM put it on sale in the United States.
Similar to Ford Motor Company, Chevrolet’s “RS” badge stands for “Rally Sport”, but where Ford reserves the designation for only its most serious, hardcore street-legal racers, General Motors’ bowtie brand most often uses “RS” to denote a particular appearance package. It was used on just such a package available on the first-generation Camaro in the 1960s, and it’s had a place in Chevrolet’s alphanumerics bin ever since.
Today, the “RS” badge typically means blacked-out exterior features – and plenty of them. The Chinese-market Chevrolet Equinox RS features an all-black grille with a black surround, black Chevrolet bowtie badges, black nameplates, black wing mirror covers, and black wheels with polished aluminum accents. Red “RS” badges adorn the grille and rear end, and the model can be had in just two colors: red, or black.
Sure, the RS package does nothing to bolster performance, but the U.S. is the world’s capital of aggressive-looking, blacked-out vehicles, and we’ve little doubt that the Chevrolet Equinox RS could find plenty of receptive buyers in the market. GM itself apparently recognizes that the U.S. is a ripe market for such vehicles; otherwise, it wouldn’t likely have brought the Blazer RS and Traverse RS here.
Do you agree that General Motors ought to sell the Chevrolet Equinox RS in the U.S., or don’t you care? Let us know in the comments section below.

Chevrolet’s longstanding, long-successful RS (or Rally Sport) badge is finally making its way onto an SUV with the arrival of the new Equinox RS. The sporty Equinox trim, only available to buyers in China, will bow at the upcoming Chengdu Motor Show, and marks the brand’s second introduction of the RS trim in the market, following the Camaro RS earlier in the year.
The new Chevy Equinox first made its debut last September, before showing up officially in China the following April. Equipped with either a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, buyers are able to choose between 170 horsepower (127 kilowatts) and 252 horsepower (188 kilowatts) respectively.

The RS badge doesn’t add an extra power, sadly, but it does introduce a bit more sporty refinement overall, both inside and out. The sleek appearance package accentuates the SUV’s upscale new design, while a red RS badge, black Chevy logo trim, body-color door panels, a black rear nameplate, black Chevy bowties, and a dark-painted wheels with silver accents finish of the package.
The Equinox RS comes available in three different variations, with red or black body color options. Customers can choose between the two engines mentioned previously, a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit, or a more powerful 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder. Both engine options come paired to GM’s six-speed DSS transmission.
The Equinox RS will be priced between RMB 220,900 and RMB 250,900 (approximately $33,480 and $38,000). Though buyers outside of China won’t be able to take home and Equinox with the sporty RS appearance package, the standard Chevy Equinox starts at $24,475 in the U.S., with the diesel option starting at $31,435.

Chevrolet today launched the Equinox RS – available only in China – at the Chengdu Motor Show. This marks the brand’s second introduction of the RS trim in the market, following the Camaro RS earlier this year.
The Equinox is GM's best-selling global SUV. It was launched in China in April. The Equinox RS is a nod to the increasing demand for performance-inspired styling among Chinese vehicle buyers.
The RS version has a sleek appearance that accentuates the SUV’s refinement and trendiness. It has added a red RS badge, black Chevrolet logo trim, body-color door handles, a black rear nameplate, black Chevrolet bowties, a stylish grille surrounded in black trim, dark-painted wheels with silver accents, and black outside rearview mirrors.
The Equinox RS’s three variants come with red or black body color options. Customers also have a choice of a 2.0L twin-scroll direct injection turbocharged engine mated to GM’s cutting-edge nine-speed Hydra-Matic transmission or a 1.5L overhead direct injection turbocharged engine paired with GM’s popular six-speed DSS transmission.
The launch of the Equinox RS follows Chevrolet’s announcement late in 2016 that it would introduce more than 20 new or refreshed products in China by the end of 2020. Nearly 30 percent of these models will be SUVs and nearly half new nameplates for the China portfolio. Chevrolet has already introduced the Malibu XL, all-new Cruze, sixth-generation Camaro, Trax and other models.
The Equinox RS is priced between RMB 220,900 and RMB 250,900.
