Mustang 2017 shelby

2017 Ford Mustang Information

The Mustang was redesigned for 2015, featuring an independent suspension to replace the live axle in the rear end, and introducing a turbocharged four-cylinder in addition to the V6 and V8 engines. Actually, it was a return of the four-cylinder turbo, but since the original was decades ago and ahead of its time, and not particularly successful except as a pioneer, it almost doesn't count.

Like it did 50 years ago, the Mustang comes as a Fastback coupe, convertible, and high-performance Shelby 350GT. It's still a 2+2 at heart, although now it's nearly as big as a midsize Ford Fusion, at 188.3 inches long on a 107.1-inch wheelbase. That gives it far more interior room than its arch-rival the Chevrolet Camaro. That said, calling it a 2+2 might be generous, as only two small people can fit in the rear.

The 2017 Mustang hasn't changed much since its introduction as a 2015 model, remaining the best Mustang ever. The 2017 Mustang outclasses the pre-2015 Mustang, with beautiful control and stability. (Note: A revised Mustang is being introduced for the 2018 model year, with freshened styling, updated technology and improved performance.)

The 2017 Mustang offers a choice of four engines. The EcoBoost 2.3-liter four-cylinder uses a twin-scroll turbo and direct injection, to make an entertaining 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. That's more than the V8 of not long ago. Mustang Eco models come with this engine.

Even though the 3.7-liter V6 makes a solid 300 horsepower, it's not treated with any fanfare by Ford. They mostly send it to rental-car fleets, and sell it to buyers who care more about Mustang coolness than performance. We'd call the engine's image long-suffering.

The 5.0-liter V8 has 435 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, more than expected from a 5.0-liter. It's a great engine. The Mustang GT can shoot to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds and reach 155 miles per hour. The Mustang GT is what the Mustang is all about and it's the one to buy.

Unless, of course, you opt for the Shelby GT350, with a 5.2-liter V8 that runs in rarified air.

The four-cylinder EcoBoost gets the best mileage with an EPA-rated 21/30 mpg City/Highway, or 24 miles per gallon Combined, with a manual transmission. The convertible and automatic get 1 mpg less on the EPA Combined city and highway rating. The V6 gets 18/27/21 mpg City/Highway/Combined with either the automatic or manual. The V8 rates 15/25/18 mpg with either transmission. The Shelby GT350 scores 14/21/16 mpg.

The Mustang coupe earns five stars across the board in crash testing by the NHTSA, and mostly the top Good ratings from the IIHS, but only Acceptable in the difficult small-overlap test that simulates hitting a pole on a front corner. Full Review

2017 Shelby GTE Mustang | Photos, Details, Specs

The Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is an impressive machine, but it’s not the only Shelby Mustang out there.

Tuning legend Carroll Shelby’s original company, Shelby American, still produces its own souped-up Mustangs independent of Ford. Its latest effort is the 2017 Shelby GTE, which the company says is a more affordable, saner option than its existing cars. The GTE is inspired by the GT-H rental car Shelby launched in collaboration with Hertz earlier this year. Of course, you don’t have to settle for just borrowing the GTE.

Shelby’s latest is available with either a 5.0-liter V8 or a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder, both derived from powertrains offered in the stock Mustang. The V8 gets a Ford Performance Power Pack, boosting output from the stock 435 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque to 456 hp and 424 lb-ft. EcoBoost output increases from 310 hp and 320 lb-ft to 335 hp and 390 lb-ft.

Shelby didn’t mention transmission options, but both engines are available with six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes in the stock Mustang. Other performance upgrades include a Ford Performance Handling Pack and exhaust system. Shelby also offers a supercharger option for the V8 that increases output to a claimed 650 to 750 hp.

To give the GTE a bit more visual spice, Shelby added a model-specific vented hood, carbon fiber front splitter and rear spoiler, and Ford Performance 19-inch wheels. The GTE is also speckled with Shelby badging, including a dashboard plaque displaying the serial number. Unlike the GT-H rental car it’s based on, the GTE is available as either a coupe or convertible.

The 2017 Shelby GTE certainly makes a statement, but with its heavy reliance on Ford Performance parts, it may not be as special as Shelby’s other Mustangs, or as compelling a package as Ford’s own GT350. Granted, that might not matter to potential buyers. They may be more interested in buying into the legend of Carroll Shelby, even if it means passing over objectively better options.

The 2017 Shelby GT350 Mustang comes in three new colors: (clockwise from foreground) Grabber Blue, Lightning Blue, and Ruby Red Metallic

What’s New for the 2017 Ford Mustang?

In the third iteration of the sixth-generation model, changes are few and far between for the 2017 Mustang. The most significant update would be the standardization of the Track Pack for the 2017 Shelby GT350 Mustang, adding an aluminum tower-to-tower brace; engine oil, transmission, and differential cooling systems; and high-downforce decklid spoiler.

The 2017 Shelby GT350 Mustang is also offered with an Electronics Package and Convenience Package. The Electronics Pack adds SYNC 3, voice-activated navigation, and nine-speaker audio system. The Convenience Package adds the contents of the Electronics Package plus leather-trimmed power sport seats.

The Shelby GT350R will be offered with an R-Electronics Package that adds nine-speaker audio.

Finally, and more broadly, the 2017 Mustang loses Deep Impact Blue and Competition Orange in favor of three new hues: Ruby Red Metallic, Lightning Blue, and Grabber Blue.

2017 Ford Mustang Exterior

The 2017 Ford Mustang has everything that we have come to know and love about the original pony car, from the tri-bar tail lamps and shark-bite nose on the outside to the twin eyebrow dash and round gauges on the inside.

Ford has made no significant upgrades to the Mustang’s aesthetic from the 2016 model year, but as the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. As ever, the 2017 Mustang is offered as both a fastback and as a convertible (V6, EcoBoost Premium, and GT Premium models).

Available colors include Race Red, Ingot Silver, Magnetic, Oxford White, Shadow Black, Triple Yellow, White Platinum, Ruby Red, Lightning Blue, and Grabber Blue (with the latter three colors being new additions for the 2017 model year). The Shelby GT350 Mustang and Shelby GT350R Mustang swap out Ingot Silver for Avalanche Gray.

2017 Ford Mustang fastback models are also available with either an Ebony Racing Stripe or Silver Racing Stripe, whereas the Mustang Convertible is only available with an Ebony Racing Stripe. The Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R are offered with a Lightning Blue with Black Racing Stripe, Black with White Racing Stripe, and White with Black Racing Stripe.

For the Mustang EcoBoost, Mustang EcoBoost Premium (fastback and convertible), and Mustang GT Premium (fastback and convertible), Ford offers either a Silver or Ebony Tape Stripe as part of the Wheel & Stripe Package.

All models above base are also offered with an optional Painted Black Roof. Convertible models are available with Black Cloth Roof.

Also worth noting: the Shelby GT350 is the first mass-produced vehicle to be offered with carbon-fiber wheels.

5.2-liter flat-plane crankshaft V8

2017 Ford Mustang Performance

The 2017 Ford Mustang is available with four different engine options.

The Mustang V6 Fastback and Convertible are offered with the 3.7-liter V6, which generates 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The V6 can be mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The Mustang EcoBoost and Mustang EcoBoost premium are powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four, which puts out 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The EcoBoost can also be linked with either the standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed SelectShift.

The Mustang GT and Mustang GT Premium come with the legendary 5.0-liter V8, which creates 435 horses or 400 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is also available with either the manual or automatic transmission.

Finally, the Shelby GT350 Mustang and Shelby GT 350R Mustang come with the award-winning 5.2-liter flat-plane crankshaft “Voodoo” V8, which puts down 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and is only available with the standard TREMEC six-speed manual.

2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost

2017 Ford Mustang Efficiency

The 2017 Ford Mustang is probably not going to sell based on its efficiency alone. However, the star of the lineup in this regard is the EcoBoost, which returns an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined with either the manual or the automatic transmission.

The V6 is steady at an EPA rating of 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway/21 mpg combined for either the automatic or the manual, and the GT’s 5.0-liter V8 returns 15 mpg city/25 mpg highway/18 mpg combined with the standard manual and 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway/18 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic.

The Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R are rated at 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway/16 mpg combined with the standard TREMEC six-speed manual.

The 2017 Ford Mustang’s interior feels like what you would expect the cockpit of a high-powered sports car to be: low, open, and with everything right at your fingertips. The Mustang offers amenities typical for modern Fords, including SYNC infotainment and Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, and the Track Apps function provides access to the GT’s optional Electronic Line-Lock and launch control (manual only) features.

For those looking for a stripped-down sports car experience, look no further than the Shelby GT350R, which cuts the radio, air conditioning, and back seat among others to drop weight for increased aerodynamics.

2017 Shelby GT350 Offers The Sexiest Mustang Colors Yet

Ford gave the Shelby GT350 and GT350R a few minor updates for the 2017 model year, which, normally, would barely be worth mentioning: a few old options made standard, a few other options consolidated. But the high-performance Mustang's sophomore-year spruce-up also adds three of the sexiest colors ever to grace a Ford: Lightning Blue, Grabber Blue, and Ruby Red Metallic.

As a result, the dead-sexy GT350 has become even sexier. Each of the three new colors brings a different type of panache to this pony car. Doesn't that Grabber Blue paint (that's the light blue one) seems to channel power and patriotism the way the Superman's costume does? Doesn't the russet skin of the Ruby Red Metallic car seem to smolder with dark fury? And doesn't the Lightning Blue color seem to channel the raw, seething power of the ocean itself? Sure, Ford had to ditch the Téa Leoni-beloved Deep Impact Blue and the tangerine-tastic Competition Orange colors in order to make room for the additions to the palette, but neither of those paints could compare to the gorgeous trio of Ruby, Lightning, and Grabber.

The rest of the 2017 updates for the maximum Mustang are designed to simplify the ordering process. The formerly-optional Track Package is now baked into the car, giving every GT350 standard magnetic ride dampers, a small spoiler, an aluminum tower-to-tower brace, and transmission, engine oil, and differential coolers. There are two new option packages that bundle together several handy features, too. The Electronics Package includes the SYNC 3 infotainment system with navigation and a nine-speaker stereo, while the Convenience Package combines all that together with power leather seats. (Base GT350 and GT350Rs make do with manually-operated Recaros.)

All in all, pretty standard stuff for a new model year update. But those colors, though. Those colors.
