The 2018 Toyota Corolla is a front-drive compact car that slots below the midsize Camry and above the subcompact Yaris. In addition to the sedan, the 2018 Corolla is also available as a hatchback called the Corolla iM (formerly the Scion iM), which comes as a single well-equipped package.
Overview
The 2018 Toyota Corolla is powered by a 1.8-liter I-4 with 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT. In the Corolla Eco, that engine makes 140 hp and 126 lb-ft but it only comes with the CVT. The Corolla iM uses the same engine as the Corolla Eco sedan but rated slightly lower at 137 hp and 126 lb-ft. In the Corolla iM hatch, the engine can be paired to a six-speed manual or a CVT.
EPA fuel economy ratings are 27/35 mpg city/highway for manual-equipped Corolla sedans and the Corolla iM hatchback, and 28/36 mpg with the CVT. The Corolla Eco is the most efficient at 29/38 mpg with the 16-inch alloy wheels or 30/40 mpg with the 15-inch steel wheels. The Corolla sedan has a 13-cubic-foot trunk that can be expanded via the standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats. For additional practicality, the Corolla iM features 20.8 cubic feet behind the standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats.
Standard features on the 2018 Corolla sedan include 60/40 split-folding rear seats, a USB port, a rearview, Bluetooth connectivity, Toyota’s Entune infotainment system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, LED headlights, 15-inch steel wheels, and cloth upholstery. Higher trims can be had with alloy wheels up to 17 inches in diameter, a moonroof, multi-beam LED headlights, leatherette upholstery, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, keyless entry/start, heated front seats, and navigation with a 7.0-inch touchscreen.
The Corolla iM hatchback comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker Pioneer audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Navigation is optional along with a number of visual accessories.
Safety
The NHTSA gave the 2018 Corolla sedan a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS has yet to test a 2018 model but the 2017 Corolla received a Good score on all crashworthiness tests and Acceptable on the headlights test (Good is the highest possible score). In the front crash prevention test, the Corolla received a Superior rating after it avoided a 12-mph and a 25-mph collision (Superior is the highest possible score in the front crash prevention test). As a result, the Toyota Corolla sedan received the Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. The Corolla iM hasn’t been crash tested by the NHTSA and IIHS.
Every 2018 Corolla sedan comes with standardToyota Safety Sense-P, which bundles together adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with steering assist and automatic high beams. The Corolla iM comes with Toyota Safety Sense-C, which only comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.
What We Think
In a 2017 First Drive review, we said that during panic stops, the brakes don’t inspire much confidence and that its acceleration is sluggish. Interior space, on the other hand, is generous with plenty of rear-seat space and we appreciated that the car comes standard with advanced safety features.
The Corolla iM hatchback offers a more comfortable ride thanks to its independent rear suspension. However, we noted in a 2016 First Test that it’s also slow because it still uses the same engine from the Corolla sedan. Cabin insulation is surprisingly good, with minimal noise entering the cabin. Like the Corolla sedan, the Corolla iM has a roomy cabin with plenty of space for all passengers and the hatch makes it even more practical.

The Toyota Corolla’s 1.8-liter I-4 was originally introduced in the 10th generation model when it debuted for the 2008 model year.
