2017 Cadillac CTS Reviews and Rating | Motortrend

  • Newly available rear camera mirror
  • Twin turbocharged V-6 on V-Sport model
  • Updated front and rear fascias
  • Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system
  • A tight-fitting back seat
  • The 2.0-liter turbo-four’s exhaust note

New for 2017

The 2017 Cadillac CTS underwent a modest refresh this year, with a revised front and rear fascia. Two new exterior colors include Bronze Dune Metallic and Silver Moonlight Metallic. Additionally, Cadillac’s new rear camera mirror is available, and there are new 17- and 18-inch wheel designs. There’s also a new Teen Driver program that can track a driver’s performance, distance driven, top speed and notes any time the stability control and other safety devices are activated. Finally, Cadillac has streamlined its trim levels and packaging to include CTS, Luxury, Premium Luxury, V-Sport and V-Sport Premium Luxury.

Vehicle Summary

The CTS is a midsize rear- or all-wheel-drive sedan with a variety of powertrains ranging from a turbocharged four-cylinder to a supercharged V-8 in the CTS-V variant. Once the basis for all future Cadillac design, the CTS remains the centerpiece in Cadillac’s lineup, though the XT5 crossover is the brand’s best-seller. Models include the CTS, the CTS V-Sport and the CTS-V.

Overview

The 2017 CTS sedan lineup starts with a turbocharged inline-four with 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Next up is the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 with 335 hp and 285 lb-ft, and the CTS V-Sport gets a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 with 420 hp and 430 lb-ft. When even that’s not enough power, the CTS-V challenges the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 producing 640 hp and 630 lb-ft.

The best mileage in the 2017 CTS lineup is, not surprisingly, from the turbo-four. In rear-drive form, the CTS 2.0 is good for 22/30 mpg city/highway, or 21/29 mpg with all-wheel drive. Go for the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6, however, and EPA-rated mileage doesn’t fall that much. Fuel economy with the 3.6 is 20/30 mpg with rear-wheel drive or 19/27 with all-wheel drive. On the rear-drive CTS V-Sport, mileage is 16/24 mpg. The high-performance CTS-V’s supercharged V-8 is rated at 14/21 mpg.

All CTS models share similar styling cues with a sharply creased exterior and a futuristic styled interior. This year the CTS adds an optional rear camera mirror, which uses a rear-facing camera and projects the image on the mirror. There are number of high-tech features inside the cabin include features such as smart remote start that will adjust climate controls after the car is started, optional 20-way adjustable front seats, LED ambient lighting, and three climate control zones to allow different temperatures for the front passengers as well as those in back.

Safety

The CTS has a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and a Good rating in all IIHS tests except the small overlap front test, where it scored the second lowest rating of Marginal rating. The CTS received the highest score of “Superior” for the front crash prevention evaluation because the Cadillac managed to avoid a 12 mph collision and reduced the speed of a 25 mph collision by 12 mph with the use of its automatic braking feature, Automatic Collision Preparation. The sedan comes with standard dual front, front side, side curtain airbags as well as rear-side airbags and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger. The Cadillac also includes a number of high-tech safety devices including lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane change alert and forward collision warning, as well as adaptive cruise control, seatbelt pretensioners and automatic high beams.

What We Think

In a First Test review of the 2016 Cadillac V-Sport, the sedan performed well track with quick acceleration, strong braking, and a fast figure-eight time. The fast shifting eight-speed automatic does a good job reducing the feel of turbo lag but more importantly, the V-Sport provides a comfortable ride while still having the ability to enter a corner flat and with plenty of grip. The steering wheel is thick and provides plenty of feedback. However, the CUE infotainment system is slow and frustrating and the rear seats are a little tight.

“Ultimately, the 2016 Cadillac CTS V-Sport proves it still sports the chops that helped it earn our Golden Calipers two years ago. Does it still hold up? Absolutely.”

Although the CTS-V is a favorite of Motor Trend, the regular CTS has left us impressed, too. On the highway, editors found that CTS continued to perform as well, if not better, than its German competition. We wish the back seat was more spacious, but otherwise the CTS is a good match for the popular German competition.

Cool Fact

The rear camera mirror can stream HD video of what is behind you, and Cadillac claims it offers 300 percent more vision than an ordinary one.

  • BMW 5 Series
  • Mercedes-Benz E Class
  • Lexus GS

2017 Cadillac CTS Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos

To get much better handling and speed than the 2017 Cadillac CTS, you'll have to either: A.) Pony up six figures; B.) Buy a racecar; or more likely C.) Do both.

The CTS is the American sedan that showed the world we could take a turn.

We gave the CTS an 8 out of 10 because perfection necessitates more horsepower (which the CTS-V has) and a lot more money. As it stands, the CTS has caught up with the rest in its class (namely German imports) in terms of handling—if not outright outruns them. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

In any configuration, the CTS hits the road with poise and confidence. It shrinks around the driver like the smaller—and related—ATS, with a standard-tune FE2 strut-and-five-link suspension, electric-assist power steering, and 17-inch wheels and tires. The equal weight balance lets even the small-tire CTS a clean cut through corners, with steering that doesn't dose up with steroidal levels of artificial weight.

Most of our time with the CTS has been spent in V-6 cars with GM's Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) suspension. That system, which uses dampers filled with magnetically charged fluid, is able to change stiffness in milliseconds and is shared with the Corvette Stingray. The CTS' magnetic dampers deliver smooth and agreeable ride quality one moment and sports car-firm damping the next. More supple than the shorter ATS thanks to more wheelbase, the CTS is never floaty or uncontrolled, and yet it's almost as agile as it's little brother. It also has sweetly tuned electric power steering and a remarkable sense of stability.

Cadillac CTS power and handling

Under the hood, the CTS even adopts most of the same powertrain lineup as the ATS—except in the high-po CTS-V, which we cover separately.

In base models, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 provides motivation. It's rated at 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which has been upgraded over previous iterations of the same engine. Those models ask for premium gas, although it isn't required, and can power the rear wheels or all four, if optionally equipped. Unlike the ATS, no manual is available here, only 8-speed automatics with paddle shifters.

The 2.0-liter turbo-4 hems and grunts, although it's not entirely satisfactory. It's not a slow powertrain by any stretch, 0-60 mph comes in roughly six seconds, which is in the same neighborhood as the uprated 3.6-liter V-6.

The more potent V-6 engine in the CTS, which is available in Luxury and Premium trims, makes 335 hp and 285 lb-ft from its V-6 layout. It's also offered in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and makes the run up to 60 mph in about the same time, although it doesn't require a hotshoe for quick, predictable launches.

Like the ATS, the 3.6-liter CTS doesn't serve up a wall of torque like its competition, rather its delivery is more progressive and predictable. It's an excellent choice for buyers interested in asking their mid-sizer to tour the interstates—or fade into the background during workday commutes.

Its best feature may be its upgraded ability to shut down two cylinders for long highway slogs, which it does with relative ease. The payoff is evident: its fuel economy returns are nearly identical to the 2.0-liter, according to the EPA.

V-Sport on top

Stepping up once, but not out of the CTS range, is the 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 planted under the hood of V-Sport cars. It has learned its lesson from hotter sedans like the Audi S6 and even the Lexus GS F Sport. It serves 420 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, and it comes only with rear-wheel drive and the paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic.

GM pegs its 0-60 mph times at 4.6 seconds and its top speed at 170 mph. It's power-shy on paper compared to a twin-turbo V-8 550i, but because it's relatively lightweight—at 3,616 pounds in base trim—the V-Sport is a vibrant straight-line performer.

The V-Sport gets a flurry of handling upgrades, including 18-inch Pirelli tires (19-inchers are an upgrade); a quicker steering ratio; a track mode for the magnetic dampers, steering, throttle, and shift points; an electronic limited-slip differential; and larger front brakes. It all compiles beautifully, with more nuance than all its digital inputs suggest. On 18-inch summer tires, the CTS V-Sport grips the ground fanatically, needling its way through carousels and esses famously, piped-in soundtrack ripping through the cabin downshift after downshift.

The third-gen version MRC in the CTS is a must-upgrade. The CTS with MRC delivers top-drawer grip precisely, without ever slacking into lame mode.
